Questions about the walkie-talkie app
How do people join the group?
Put one group chat QR code where the crew gathers: the sign-in table, a lanyard, a tour paddle. Each person scans it with the phone camera and is in. Nobody has to add anyone or pass a contact list around.
Does it work with my phone locked?
When it opens, yes, in the iQR Alerts app: keep the phone locked in your pocket and you still hear the channel live. To talk, press and hold the button, and let go to stop. Listening with the phone locked will need the app; a browser tab cannot do it.
Can one person speak to everyone at once?
Yes. Press and hold, say “the washroom by the main stage needs cleaning”, and the whole group hears it as you speak. That is what a push-to-talk app is for: no dialling, and nobody waiting for someone to pick up.
Do we have to swap phone numbers?
No. Nobody’s number is shown to anyone else, so a crew of strangers gets a group chat without phone numbers, and nobody adds work contacts to a personal messaging app.
Do we still need two-way radios?
When it opens, iQR works as a two-way radio app on the phones your crew already carries, with the chat and the group call beside it. It is not a radio, though: where the phones have no signal, there is no channel. Keep radios for sites without coverage.
When can I use it?
Not yet. Group chat and the walkie-talkie are planned for the iQR Alerts app, and nothing is open today. Leave your email and we will write to you the day your crew can start.
